Volume XXXI of The Works of Hubert Howe Bancroft. Originally published in 1890 (San Francisco), this reprint by Arno Press (1967) in cooperation with McGraw-Hill, New York, Toronto, London, Sydney. Black cloth issued without dj; spine titles bright; small previous owner name stamp on ffep, Else Fine. [xxvi] + 836 pp. [cf. Smith 519]
Of the complete set of 39 volumes, Howes notes: “Colossal co-operative undertaking; nothing approaching it has ever been attempted in this country.” The depth of research is, in part, attested to by virtue of the list of ‘Authorities Consulted’ (pp. xvii-xxvi) and the Index (pp. 809-836) [Howes B91].
Washington’s history is described from the first settlers and the presence of the Hudson’s Bay Company, the separation of the Territory from Oregon and the life and character of Governor Stevens, the ‘Indian Wars’, to its political and economic progress culminating in Statehood. A similar treatment is given Idaho and Montana, including a few references to the Mormons in Idaho.
