of Geology at the University of British Columbia
The volume has been inscribed (though not signed) on the front free endpaper “with the compliments of the author” below which is the signature, in fine hand, of Stuart J Schofield, who retired from UBC in 1940. The University holds his fonds.
Bound in dark, burgundy cloth with gilt titles on the front boards and the spine, the work was Memoir 56 in the Geological Series of the Department of Mines; Ottawa, Government Printing Bureau, 1915. Octavo; pp. [ix] + 246, and [i]-[vi] list of publications, with maps as called for in Ferrier, Annotated Catalogue and Guide to the Publications of the Geological Survey Canada 1845-1917 (1920), p. 128, together with 48 other illustrations and plates. These fold-out maps (all Fine) are of the “Franklin mining camp, West Kootenay”, the “Mineral Claims, Franklin mining camp”, and a “Block diagram of McKinley mine, Franklin mining camp”.
Condition: By way of detractions, there is uniform sun-fading of the spine titles; a small blemish near the base of the front gutter, a small sticker on the spine with the number “56”, and marginalia noted at p. 152 and p. 168. The endpaper along the initial hinge is splitting, though the binding remains firm and square; the front cover is not notably loose. All plates are present, with tissue guards, the first of which forms a frontispiece photograph “looking down Franklin valley from northwest corner of map area”.
