Author: Bell, Archie and Mary (Compilers)
Reference #: 1621
Status: For Sale
List Price: $68.00
Self-published, n.p., n.d. (but circa 1962). Quarto (10”), bound in blue cloth with bright gilt titles. Pp. [1, title], [1, genealogical chart], + (1)-31; typescript, printed on rectos only. The notes on pp. 26 ff. cross-reference people mentioned in the text. These include, inter alia, “eminent author” Charles Kingsley, his eldest daughter Rose Kingsley, and his brother Dr. George Kingsley; William Jackson, President of the Denver and Rio Grande Railway; and landscape painter Walter Paris. These notes also mention ‘The Mountain of the Holy Cross’ in the Saguache Range of the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, which featured in legal proceedings granting the Denver and Rio Grande Railway the right to “build tracks through the narrow and spectacular canyon called the Royal Gorge” (n. 30, p. 30).
The first seven pages set the historical background, and the text of the journal follow. The social history and the chronological theme make this volume more than just a family history of one nineteenth century immigrant to Colorado. Signed with a gift inscription on the front free endpaper by the authors. Uncommon.
