& Elected Alberta Legislature 1921-1926
Thomas Allen, Limited, Toronto. A later reprint of McClung’s first novel, originally published in 1911. The dj is price-clipped, and has minor chipping primarily seen at the tail and head of the spine.
McClung was a leading suffragette, and was one of five women who lent their names to “the Persons Case” which was resolved only upon appeal from the Supreme Court of Canada to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. She was thereafter elected to the Alberta legislature as a Liberal M.L.A.
Our copy was seemingly purchased at a reading by McClung in Victoria, and was intended as a gift with a warm, dated inscription from the donor at the top of the front free endpaper. McClung has then added a note “with the best wishes of the author” thereunder. A common edition, but most desirable with the signature of one of the most important women in early Canadian political history.
