Philip became King of Spain upon the abdication of Charles V, and of Portugal as Philip I by virtue of his first marriage to the Infanta Mary of Portugal. His reign featured an alliance with the Papacy, and then a battle against its influence, a war against the Turks, and, of course the launching of the Spanish Armada against Sir Francis Drake and the British.
