From the Foreword: “In this book I have attempted to give the reader a portrait of St. John the Baptist by means of texts from Holy Scripture and tradition, along with the Byzantine icons relating to these. . . . The description of these [icons] and the section on iconographic types are taken from Photios Contoglou, Expression of Orthodox Iconography, Vol. I, Astir, Athens 1960. This choice was dictated by the fact that Contoglou’s descriptions of the contents of the icons is so graphic, detailed and eloquent that no other bears comparison with them.”
A Near Fine copy in like dustwrapper; the rear hinge is starting at the base, but the binding remains firm, tight and square. There are no previous owner names or other markings.
