The Mulligan Affair
Macdonald & Co., London, 1944 First Edition. Small 8vo (19cm). Cloth. Signed. Fine / Very Good. The travels of Canadian-born humourist and radio announcer both in Canada and with the BBC, this is a desirable association copy having been inscribed of the frontis port. "To Chief Mulligan". This was Chief Constable Walter Mulligan of the infamous "Mulligan Affair": corruption within the Vancouver City Police Department that lead to Mulligan's fleeing the country for several years. Levis' connection with Mulligan would undoubtedly have been through his (Levi's) father who was a Detective with the Toronto Police Department "and was later transferred to Vancouver where he was murdered while on the track of a gangster." The travels Levi describes relate to a journey he took from London through the Holy Land to Iran (Persia), with a meeting with the troops in Italy (Anzio) on the homeward trek during the final year of WWII. Very small circlular discolouration on ffep; Fine overall. The dustjacket is not price-clipped but has been taped verso for one closed tear.
