The present volume, its successor, has been so enlarged, revised, updated, and widened in scope that it constitutes an entirely new work.” Each contribution was written by a recognized expert. Apart form the subjects found in many natural history works, this includes such diverse and specific topics as “The Smaller Placental Mammals of Canterbury”, and “The Quaternary History of the Vegetation”, this latter with much on macrofossil evidence and plant microfossils. Most of the 36 chapters include notes in the form of a bibliography or references. Of note for ecologists is the material on ‘Introduced’ species, pests and diseases, and their impact on the region.
