Pp. xii + 448 pp.; vi + 661, including extensive index; 5 Folding maps as called for (2 in colour) at rear of Vol. 2, two of which have double folds, and one of which has been folded such that a small portion protrudes above top edge and has become age-toned, else Near Fine. The author was a former Lecturer in Colonial History at Leyden University. A well-researched history of the Netherlands (Dutch) East Indies, with much detail on the battles, both political and military, with the British and Portuguese for control of the spice trade. Bibliographic references follow each chapter. (For an interesting and accessible summary of that battle, vide Giles Milton’s “Nathaniel’s Nutmeg: How One Man’s Courage Changed the Course of History” (London 1999).
