London: J. Dodsley, 1794. 16mo (16 cm). Half-Leather. Very Good Published without author's name, this collection of verse for the young was the work of physician Nathaniel Cotton (1705-1788), who kept a lunatic asylum at St. Albans. [DNB] The moral instruction contained in the poems made this work immediately successful, as evidenced by this the Twelfth Edition, Revised and Enlarged, published after his passing. With editions in various bindings and illustrations, this copy is half-bound in morocco over marbled paper, gilt titles on spine, and a hand-coloured copper engraving by Charles Grignion as a frontispiece. Of interest for the historical perspective it gives to the place of morality in the education process, as the themes addressed include 'Slander', 'Pleasure', 'Marriage', 'Life' and 'Death', amongst others. pp. 141 + [2, pub. advts.].
